The Hill Country Devil
Sweet Daffodil
Poison lines the seams upon my coat
As I carry 'round the anger I have known
And watch the lines of eager gamblers calling high
On any pair that passes by
Bless there hearts, I hope they ride
When I find myself among the crowd
Tossing dollars at the bottom of the rounds
Don't you weep, 'cause I'll take pride in all I keep
I'll set the marks just wait a while
I'll shine like hell with a crooked smile
Out on Porter Road
Where the money's tight and life has slowed
I come to get my fill
Of cocaine streams and daffodils
Sweet daffodil
Jesus ought to hang right next to me
When you go and paint my likeness in the street
But don't you weep
'Cause every trail I never knew
Gets blurred and slaughtered in the avenues
My prints before remain forever-more
And out past the Cumberland gap
Where the boom is big and the checks are fat
I go to get my fill
Of cocaine streams and daffodils
Sweet daffodil
