Used to Be

That sign up there says "Nissan,"
But  where it's worn away
You  can still read "Chevrolet."
Bought my '86 Camaro here
I still miss that car today

And  over there, where the Stop-and-Go sits
Was  the mom and pop with the slow-cooked grits
And the sweet iced tea
With  refills free
And cups of Joe, and company

There used to be a sign up
Saying "Glad you came!"
When  ev'ry little town around
Was as different as its name
Now everywhere you go
It all just looks the same:

Walmarts, Walgreens
Wendy's, Applebees
Starbucks, Stuckey's
Best Buy-

[J.D. & BENNY]
Mickey D's
[BENNY]
And that used to be the drive-in
Where you tried to make some time

[J.D.]
And that used to be the pharmacy
Next to what used to be the five-and-dime

[J.D. & BENNY]
They sold ices at the counter
Lemon, cherry, grape or lime

[J.D.]
The corner store
The barber shop
The library

[BENNY]
The drive-in
The mom and pop

[BOTH]
The bakery

[J.D.]
Now this town's just a collection
Of some old guy's memories, just a
[ALL]
Ghost upon a ghost
Of all these used to be's

[J.D.]
But if it looks the same
Everywhere you roam
Tell me, how do you know
When you've gotten home?

[ALL]
How do you know
When you've gotten home?

[J.D.]
One coffee cup
One K-Mart brand
Chicken nugget served
Throughout the land

[NORMA]
The fresh bread smell from the bakery
That used to fill my car

[J.D.]
The lights of the all-night diner
Shining like my truth North Star
And all the
[J.D., NORMA, BENNY]
Thousand other little things
That make us who we are

[KELLI & GREG]
Walmarts

[BENNY]
The drive-in

[KELLI & GREG]
Walgreens

[J.D.]
The mom and pop

[JESUS]
Wendy's

[HEATHER]
The five-and-dime

[ALL]
Applebees

Memories

[J.D.]
Only memories

[J.D. & BENNY]
Of how it used to be
