Edgar Allan Poe
The Tell-Tale Heart
I’ve got a secret buried deep inside
A madness I can’t hide, though I’ve tried and tried
It wasn’t hate, no, it wasn’t rage
But that eye, that eye like a vulture’s gaze
I loved the old man, but I couldn’t stand
That evil eye watching, like a curse on my hand
Each night I crept, I watched him sleep
Waiting for the moment when the eye wouldn’t peek

It’s the heartbeat, won’t let me go
Thump, thump, thumping down below
I hear it in the silеnce, I hear it in the dark
Thе sound of guilt, the tell-tale heart
The tell-tale heart
The tell-tale heart

On the eighth night, I made my move
I opened the door, so silent, so smooth
He woke with a start, that eye wide with fear
And in that moment, the end was clear
I smothered him quick, without a sound
His heart stopped beating, he was underground
But even as I buried him beneath the floor
That cursed heart, it pounded more and more

It’s the heartbeat, won’t let me go
Thump, thump, thumping down below
I hear it in the silence, I hear it in the dark
The sound of guilt, the tell-tale heart
The tell-tale heart
The tell-tale heart
The police came knocking, they said, “We’ll see,”
But I was calm, too calm to be free
I led them in, I showed them around
But all the while, I heard that sound
It grew louder, like a drum in my head
Couldn’t they hear it, the sound of the dead?
I laughed, I smiled, but inside was a scream
The heartbeat tearing apart my dream

It’s the heartbeat, won’t let me go
Thump, thump, thumping down below
I hear it in the silence, I hear it in the dark
The sound of guilt, the tell-tale heart
The tell-tale heart
The tell-tale heart

I ripped up the floor! I cried out in pain!
“Look, here he is! I can’t take it again!”
The heart, the heart, it gave me away
Thump, thump, thumping, night and day

It’s the heartbeat, won’t let me go
Thump, thump, thumping down below
I hear it in the silence, I hear it in the dark
The sound of guilt, the tell-tale heart
The tell-tale heart
It’s pounding still
The tell-tale heart—
It always will--
The tell-tale heart--
It’s the sound that kills
The tell-tale heart—
