Shel Silverstein
Painting Her Fingernails
She's painting her fingernails
While waiting for something to happen
Listening to love songs
And watching the clock on the wall
She could fix her A cheese sandwich
But someone might ask her to dinner
So she's painting her fingernails
Waiting for someone to call
There's A tough yellow photograph
Tucked in the edge of the mirror
That Raggedy Ann doll
That she played with as A child
There's an old top dresser drawer
Filled with Jewelry pills and Old letters
And she's painting her fingernails
Dreaming of Falling in Style
And there on the desk
Is A dark Macabre that
She Started last December
And the black guilded Christmas Card
He sent her 3 Years ago
So she's stretching her legs
With an exercise she's been neglecting
Painting her fingernails
Hoping that the grey doesn't show
In the fridge there's what's left
Of last Wednesday nights
Candlelight Dinner
On her neck is A love mark
Just to prove he was there
And she took off from the Dentist
Just to take her red coat
To the cleaners And she's
Painting her fingernails
Wondering if anyone cares
Then it donns on me
That the telephone
Just night be out of order
So she picks it up, hears some Talk
Then sits down again
Yeah they're so different than other
Well there's so many other men
That if she has to they'll
Call back again
She dresses the cute one
And she smiles again
She dresses herself up
In front of Johnny Carson
And she smiles goodnight
At the Bullfighter there on the wall
And she crawls into bed
Knowing that this time tomorrow
She'll be painting her fingernails
Waiting for someone to call
She'll be painting her fingernails
Waiting for something to do
