The Velvet Underground
I’m Waiting for the Man (live version 1)
[Concert intro]
Good evening
We're your local Velvet Underground
We're glad to see you
Thank You
But we're uh particularly glad on a serious day like today
That people could find that little time to come out and have Some fun to rock and roll
'cause these are serious times
Or I've been told they are
And since they're serious
We felt impelled to do a very serious set
So this is going to be a very serious rock and roll set
And I don't want any of you to enjoy yourselves frivoulously(?)
Because it will run against national policy
Which rhymes by the way, which is how poets are

Anyway...where I come from they arrest people for less than that
And they won't give you a car

This is a song that was written under the influence of dreams
And it's about one man's journey from uptown to downtown

[Verse 1]
I'm waiting for my man
Twenty-six dollars in my hand
Gone up to Lexington, 125
Feeling sick and dirty, more dead than alive
[Chorus]
I'm waiting for my man

[Verse 2]
Hey, white boy, what you doin' uptown?
Hey, white boy, you chasin' our women around?
Oh pardon me sir, it's the furthest from my mind
I'm just lookin' for a dear, dear friend of mine

[Chorus]
I'm waiting for my man

[Verse 3]
Here he comes, he's all dressed in black...oh woah
PR shoes and a big straw hat
He's never early, he's never late
First thing you learn is you always gotta wait

[Chorus]
I'm waiting for my man

[Verse 4]
Time's are getting heavy, I'm so sad
Everyone that was good, you know they all turned out bad
It's not a mystery, no mistake
All I'm gonna have to do is wait
[Chorus]
I'm waiting for my man

[Verse 5]
Standing on the corner waiting for the sun to rise
Miss Jean and Miss Anne said they had a surprise
Well it's no mystery, no mistake
I guess I just had to wait

[Chorus]
I'm waiting for my man

[Verse 6]
Ever since I was a little boy, I had the strangest dreams
Everything that I saw didn't seem to be what it seem
I'm no wizard, take my speed
Always you know I've got to leave

[Chorus]
I'm waiting for my man

[Verse 7]
Gone up to a Brownstone, up three flights of stairs
Everybody’s pinned you, but nobody cares
He’s got the works, gives you sweet taste
Then he's gotta split because he's got no time to waste
[Chorus]
I'm waiting for my man

[Verse 8]
Hey baby don’t you holler, darlin' don’t you bawl and shout
I’m feeling good, you know I’m gonna work it on out
I’m feeling good, I’m feeling, oh, so fine
Until tomorrow, but that’s just some other time

[Outro]
I'm waiting for my man (x7)
