Nothing Can Stop The Sun
NARRATOR
Days passed
The world spun
News spread
From New York to Washington
Cleveland to Boston
‘Nothing can stop the Sun
Even in the days between
John Herschel’s discoveries
They sold in numbers never seen
‘No, nothing can stop the Sun
The Sentinel, Gazette, and Tribune
Were left scratching their heads
'Cause no news is bigger than the moon
Not in eighteen thirty-five
Oh, what a time to be alive
Sir John Herschel’s journal had people buzzing
Like bees around a hive
In the summer of eighteen thirty-five
The news of the world took to the skies
And made amateur astronomers
Out of all the girls and guys
With Rose and Samuel at the vanguard
CHORUS
Keepers of the journal
NARRATOR
Herschel's famous messengers
CHORUS
The pride of Printing House Square
NARRATOR
There were lines to shake their hands
That wrapped around the paper stand
CHORUS
Herschel’s trusted messengers
NARRATOR
Chester Thomas would declare
THOMAS
Nothing can stop the Sun
All my fears are gone
This must be how Caesar felt
When he crossed the Rubicon
Benjamin, nothing can stop the Sun
My victory is complete
BENJAMIN
They should rename Broadway
Call it Chester Thomas street
THOMAS
A capital idea, Benjamin
BENJAMIN
I have another capital idea
THOMAS
(sighs) If you say that you want a ‘raise’ again-
BENJAMIN
It was me who ran the first journal entry. I'm more responsible for The Sun's success than anybody here, so why am I the one-
THOMAS
Samuel lucked into the story of a lifetime, so I can look past his... eccentricities. You betrayed me by running the first entry. As my editor, I rely on you to have my back, and you failed. How can I reward a man who I cannot trust?
BENJAMIN
But-
THOMAS
That will be all, Benjamin
BENJAMIN
...Yes sir
NARRATOR
When the working day was done
Moonlight overtook the sun
But someone had to work the printing press
Newspaper editors get no reprieve
The first to arrive, the last to leave
Rose had a delivery
ROSE
“Journal entry number three”
NARRATOR
They both arranged the letters
Into sentences and paragraphs
Readying a plate to press
John Herschel’s latest feat
BENJAMIN
Thanks for helping, I know that
You're busy signing autographs
ROSE
Not too busy, Benjamin
To print a couple sheets
ROSE
Being famous is strange. It makes me miss
The quiet
BENJAMIN
No, it doesn’t
ROSE
Yeah, it doesn't. I'm an awful liar
BENJAMIN
You're better than you think. I'm sorry, Rose. I didn’t mean it like that
ROSE
Is everything alright?
BENJAMIN
I've just got a lot on my mind
Enjoy the noise while it lasts
Enjoy the parade, it goes by fast
Enjoy the present before it’s past
This will not last forever
ROSE
Perhaps not. But this feeling will
I'll never let it stop
