The Lighthouse
BLACKBEARD
I was the scourge of the wind and sky
I was fearsome and renowned
I gripped my ship with an iron glove
And the weakest links were drowned
You offered me diversion
Said the most bewitching things
Taught their proper spots but not
The meaning of your rings
I let you draw me closer
Like a fleet to open docks
But I learned too late you’d chose my fate
And I crashed upon the rocks
I was the scourge of the open seas
So I guess I never learned
Not to get too close to the fresnel lens
Where you touched my face, it burned
You shimmered like a fire
And you looked so warm inside
I didn’t even notice when
My self-possession died
But I loved it, and I chased you
Let you skin my honor whole
I’ve broken legs and promises
But for you I broke my soul
It felt good to hurt him
Felt good to let go
I’m a creature of the darkness
And my home is far below
Meant to be forgotten
Rotten, yes, but right
The shadow of a monster
I can’t join you in the light
You made me dream of comfort
We’d live decadent and free
But dreams aren’t meant for people like us
Those dreams aren’t meant for things like me
I am the scourge of the open sea
And I hope you hear my vow:
I will scour the weakness from my heart
And I’ll hunt your weakness now
You vanished like a specter
Standing smugly out of reach
I hope you burn until you’re nothing
No more dignity to leech
So you lured me to your lurid shoals
But I can disembark
I hope you’re ready, hope you’re waiting
I am coming in the dark
I hope you’re swimming, hope you’re bleeding
I’ll scent you like a shark
I will find you, I will kill you
You will not escape my mark
And you’ll wish you’d never deigned to see
A better, brighter side of me
I am the scourge of the open seas…
I am the scourge of the open seas…
I will tear down your lighthouse
I will bring you to your knees
