Julius Caesar Essay
In the Tragedy of Julius Caesar, Brutus is portrayed as an idealistic hero through his beliefs about himself and Rome's government and through his motives behind the choices he makes.

Brutus believes in a democratic government. Brutus kills Caesar in the name of liberty (Document A).This is significant because it shows that Brutus thinks that one-man rule is dangerous enough to have him murder his friend. Therefore, he believes in democracy enough to be willing to sacrifice lives, like Caesar's life. Furthermore, Cassius states that there was once a Brutus who would let a devil rule Rome before he let a king rule (Document E).This shows that the Brutus line has never really liked one-man rule. Therefore, Marcus Brutus probably holds the same ideals towards democracy as his ancestors did. All of these points prove that Brutus believes strongly in a democratic government.

Brutus killed Caesar for the sake of his country, Rome. Brutus states “not that I have loved Caesar less, but that I loved rome more” (Document A). This shows that Brutus is very patriotic, to the point where nationalism is more important to him than his friends. Therefore, Brutus killed Caesar because he thought that would help his country, Rome. Brutus also states "we will stand against the spirit of Caesar"(Document E). This means that Brutus stands against the idea of one-man rule, since Caesar was showing signs of becoming king. Therefore, Brutus thinks that Rome would do better under a democracy, not a kingship. Both of these facts prove that Brutus killed Caesar for the sake of Rome.

We now know that Brutus believes in democracy and is against having a king. We also know that, because of his beliefs, he killed his friend and possible king, Caesar. This was all for the sake of saving their country, Rome, and so this shows that Brutus is the idealistic hero in the Tragedy of Julius Caesar.
