The Reason I Came Back
I have this awful habit of trying things twice
to remind myself why
I didn't like them in the first place.
For example: watermelon.
I know that I hate watermelon
for being a watery styrofoam excuse
for a fruit, yet I still take a slice
at summer picnics to reiterate to myself
what the problem is.
The real trouble with this habit comes in
with people.
I knew I didn’t like the acidic taste of his name
in my mouth, but I came back a second time.
To double-check. To ask my heart
if she was sure.
