Amazon Echo Dot with Clock vs. Amazon Echo Dot: What’s best to listen songs?
At its Seattle event on Sept. 25, 2019, Amazon announced the fourth edition of its Echo Dot speaker, known as Echo Dot with Clock. Having the ability to say “Alexa” and have your questions instantly answered may be nothing short of futuristic, but with different Amazon Echo devices all offering the same voice assistant, which one should you get? At the Amazon Devices Event in Seattle in September 2019, Amazon announced eight new Echo devices, including updates to their original Echo and Echo Dot speakers that will release on October 16, 2019. Oh, decisions, decisions and now, more decisions.

So, which is better? The Echo or the Dot? Both the Amazon Echo and Amazon Echo Dot have built-in omnidirectional microphones designed to pick up your voice from anywhere in the room, but there are noticeable and important differences between the two devices. We’ll break it all down in our Amazon Echo vs. Dot showdown.

The Amazon Echo and Echo Dot both come with Amazon’s voice assistant, Alexa. You can ask Alexa to read the news, solve math problems, report the weather, play music, turn on your lights, and a whole lot more. The assistant can tell you what movies are on this evening, create and recommend routines for your smart devices, and catch you up on sports. You can even create your own skills on either device using Alexa Blueprints. Plus, Alexa continues to come out with new features. If you have a Ring smart doorbell, Alexa will be able to talk to your guests with a new feature called “doorbell concierge.”

Just use the wake word, which is “Alexa” by default, to access what the device has to offer. With 360-degree omnidirectional microphones, both devices are designed to always listen and hear you from anywhere in the room. However, while the latest Echo has a more advanced seven-microphone array, the latest iteration of the Dot has a simpler four-microphone array. Got music playing? No worries. Whether you have the Echo or the Dot, Alexa will still hear you over the sound of you blasting Cardi B. Well, provided you enunciate.

As the name suggests, the speaker is almost identical to the previous version, but now it has an attractive LED clock face that always tells you the time. You can also tap the top of the device to activate a "snooze" feature, which further reinforces its potential as an alarm clock. Amazon Echo Dot with Clock FunctionalityThe 4th-gen Amazon Echo Dot is, for the most part, very similar to its predecessor. It's still a small, circular Alexa speaker, which will respond to your commands, pair with your other Amazon gadgets, issue smart home orders and so forth.

The big difference this time around is an always-on LED clock face, which tells you the time by default. You can also program it to show temperature or the times of upcoming alarms.

Presumably, Amazon wants customers to use the Echo Dot with Clock primarily as a bedside alarm clock. In addition to the clock face, users can also tap the top of the device to "snooze" for a pre-programmed number of minutes.

Otherwise, everything the 3rd-gen Echo Dot can do, the 4th-gen can do, too — and vice versa. Amazon Echo Dot with Clock PriceThe only other big difference between the two devices is the pricing. The Amazon Echo Dot with Clock will cost $60, whereas the displayless Echo Dot will continue to cost $50, at least for the near future. (We would not be shocked if Amazon decides to lower the price at some point to clear out its inventory and focus on the newer device instead.)

We'll go hands-on with the Echo Dot with Clock once the Amazon event concludes, and give it a full review when we acquire one for ourselves. Until then, stay tuned to Tom's Guide for additional Amazon coverage.
