Jackson Browne
The Crow on the Cradle
[Intro]
This is a very old song
I didn't write this song
This was a traditional song that was, was rewritten in the sixties
By a man named Sydney Carter
And um
And Graham Nash and I sang this song on the
No Nukes album for MUSE concerts
And we wanna play it for you tonight
It's called "The Crow on the Cradle"
[Verse 1]
The sheep's in the meadow, the cow's in the corn
Now is the time for a child to be born
He'll laugh at the moon and he'll cry for the sun
And if it's a boy he'll carry a gun
Sang the crow on the cradle
[Verse 2]
And if it should be that this baby's a girl
Never you mind if her hair doesn't curl
With rings on her fingers and bells on her toеs
And a bomber above her whеrever she goes
Sang the crow on the cradle
[Verse 3]
The crow on the cradle, the black and the white
Somebody's baby is born for a fight
The crow on the cradle, the white and the black
Somebody's baby is not coming back
Sang the crow on the cradle
[Guitar Solo]
[Verse 4]
Your mother and father, they'll sweat and they'll save
To build you a coffin and dig you a grave
Hush-a-bye little one, never you weep
For we've got a toy that can put you to sleep
Sang the crow on the cradle
[Verse 5]
Bring me my gun and I'll shoot that bird dead
That's what your mother and father once said
The crow on the cradle, what can we do?
Ah, this is a thing that I'll leave up to you
Sang the crow on the cradle
Ah, this is a thing that I'll leave up to you
Sang the crow on the cradle
[Outro]
Jackson, don't forget Hiroshima, don't forget
No, we don't forget Hiroshima, never
Hiroshima is a very special place in the world
I have a beautiful photograph of two little children
Playing in the—
Well, what's left of the frame of the dome
That was at the epicenter of the atomic blast
Two beautiful Japanese boys
And their faces full of life and full of hope, and um
Taken by a friend of mine
And the caption of the photograph is
"Fill the world with your love"
Oh, there's a lot to do in the world
You have this amazing museum here
And you have a, a consciousness that
Not everybody else in the world has
Especially those countries that have never
Withstood a nuclear attack
I think we all know that we come from the only country
That's ever dropped a nuclear bomb on anybody
So it's very heavy
It's very, very, you know
Heavy for us to come here to Hiroshima to
To play for you
We hope that you know that you are an inspiration to us
Thank you so much for coming to hear us play
