[Pops singing along to Gil Scott-Heron]
...Hoping for some rain
Looks like it's hoping
Hoping for some rain
And I see the robins
Perched in barren treetops
Watching last-ditch racists marching across the floor
Just like the peace sign that vanished in our dreams
Never had a chance to grow
Never had a chance to grow
And now it's winter
Winter in America
And all of the healers have been killed
Or betrayed
Yeah, but the people know, the people know
It's winter...
Lord knows it's winter in America
And ain't nobody fighting
'Cause nobody knows what to save
Save your souls
From Winter in America
[Pops]
Now here come Brian Jackson come in, he on them sticks...
People wake up man
Stop drinking your coffee man with cream and sugar
You know?
Have it straight no chaser
I mean like you say, you listen to those lyrics man
The Constitution
A noble piece of paper
With free society
Struggled but they died in vain
And now Democracy is ragtime on the corner
Hoping for some rain...
I mean ragtime on the corner-
That's like old Vaudeville show
It's like a play
It's like it's not real, you know
Democracy is not real
You know, that's what he's saying
It's ragtime, and ragtime like I said is like a vaudeville play
You know
Theres a couple of verses that were before that, But when you start thinking about them, you think, he kinda takes that whole thing man from, you know, when the Europeans landed here
Cause like you say, from the Indians who welcomed the pilgrims, to the buffalos who once ruled the plain-
Well you know obviously the buffalos, they were all slaughtered you know for their hide and stuff like that
But again just chronicling how, you know, a select group of people, you know pretty much devastated, and decimated everything, you know, in the land, anything in their way. You know, just, you know to make a profit
And again, democracy- ragtime on the corner- its no democracy it's all an act, you know
Democracy that western civilization, means really is that, it's sorta like democracy by any means necessary
And that means, you know, if it's one of those things where, we have to force you into believing what we believe, then, we'll do it like that, by any means necessary we gonna have our way
We've rejected theocracy because we just don't want God ruling over us, that's just the sin nature
We've accepted a plutocracy
All in hopes of a democracy
Because plutocracy- few, powerful, rich rulers allows people in a democracy to believe that that can soon be then
Because if all things are free and equal, then why can't I?
But the plutocracy has different ideas for the democracy. Because the plutocracy realizes that there's only 2 kind of people:
Those that work
And those that don't
And they are going to challenge anyone that tries to make them work
And they're gonna make every effort possible to make sure that there are always those that continue to make them rich
But in order to do that, they have to give the illusion that there's liberty & justice for all. And that if I did it, you can do it
But again, that is not the case
And so, we've rejected, like I said the true and only rule that God can give us for, you know, liberty & justice for all
We just, that's not gonna, that's, we just think about that as, you know, that's good for some people but not for... you know..
But the plutocracy, those that are there, those are the ones, like you said, call them the illuminati, call them the power elite, call them man, you know whatever you wanna call them
Those few have always been there
And their job has always been to convince the masses that you're all free, you're all equal, you all can be rich and famous and just like us, but they're gonna make every effort possible not for it to happen
You know...
[Gil Scott-Heron]
'Cause nobody knows what to save
And ain't nobody fighting
Cause nobody knows, nobody knows
And ain't nobody fighting
'Cause nobody knows what to save
[Ashely]
