Mama said wake up it’s time for church
Daddy only wake up when it’s time for work
You don’t wake up any day
So take your lithium Penny Mae

She was only 14, they said she was phrenic
Zombie pills, it’s an epidemic
They said she saw people but she only Molly
But Molly was real cause she worked at Burger King
She didn’t like Picasso, she only like Dali
Plus realism really wasn’t her thing
She believes in God, she just don’t like religion
She thinks it’s all bullshit just like her Ritalin
I think I take lithium, I think it’s in batteries
Maybe it’s the reason I’m a robot in this galaxy
Maybe I’m fine or maybe I’m crazy
Or maybe I need it cause I’m not a normal lady?
As she ate breakfast, she thought about Ernest and orange juice
She thought about Sylvia Plath and the truth
She thought about melancholy and the definition
Then she took another lithium just like repetition
No manic Mondays, she had a manic lifetime
And when she panicked, Xanax was her lifeline
She wrote help me on her head with her sister’s make up
It’s all ready noon, she don’t want to wake up

Mama said wake up it’s time for church
Daddy only wake up when it’s time for work
You don’t wake up any day
So take your lithium Penny Mae

Brain like a race horse pissing on her summer
The insurance company just bought a hummer
Her doctor is damn sure filling her quota
But Penny is good, she take them pills like she suppose to
Everyday is tragic she can’t hold a job
The voices in her head all just applaud
She done have mood swings, she has mood bullets
When you’re numb to the world it’s hard to live it to the fullest
Every 30 minutes is a teeter totter
Lithium is her mother and she beats her daughter
But Penny got goals and Penny likes to paint
But Ambien CR just makes her faint
She wakes back up and takes an Adderall
So many pills she can’t add them all
Thorazine, Zoloft and Klonopin
Now she’s being woke up by her mom again
She calls up Molly and they meet at McCoy’s
They drink a pot of coffee and gossip bout boys
She takes another lithium and finishes her sandwich
Now she’s daydreaming bout a palate and a canvas
She goes to sleep and she asks for peace
But tomorrow she’s gonna paint her masterpiece

Mama said wake up it’s time for church
Daddy only wake up when it’s time for work
You don’t wake up any day
So take your lithium Penny Mae
