FADE IN: PAINTING MONTAGE
A traditional Japanese village sits in a lush hilly landscape. The words "BLIZZARD ENTERTAINMENT PRESENTS" appears. Pan right to reveal two dragons, one green and one blue, circling and weaving around each other.
VOICEOVER: [Hanzo] My family tells of an ancient legend about two great dragon brothers; The Dragon of the North Wind and the Dragon of the South Wind. Together, they upheld balance and harmony in the heavens.
HANAMURA EXT. - NIGHT
Hanzo drops down in front of the Rikimaru shop. He runs through the streets to the Shimada Castle. Genji watches him from a perch above. Hanzo climbs over the large door with a carving of the two dragons forming a circle.
VOICEOVER: [Hanzo] But the two brothers argued over who could better rule their land.
PAINTING MONTAGE - CONTINUOUS
The two dragons are fighting. Pan down to reveal the green dragon falling into a burning village after the blue dragon strikes him down.
VOICEOVER: [Hanzo] Their quarrel turned to rage and their violent struggle darkened the skies, until the Dragon of the South Winds struck down his brother, who fell to Earth, shattering the land.
HANAMURA EXT. - CONTINUOUS
Several guards are stationed around the temple; one yawns. Hanzo fires an arrow into an omnic guard's chest - causing an eruption of sparks and electricity, then drops down and throws another guard off the balcony. A third guard, startled, tries to call for help, but Hanzo shoots the phone out of his hand while disarming and strangling a fourth guard. The third guard runs head first into the bonshō and is knocked out.
PAINTING MONTAGE
The blue dragon lies in a burning village, somber. A volcano erupts in the background.
VOICEOVER: [Hanzo] The Dragon of the South Wind had triumphed, but as time passed and he realized his solitude, the sweetness of victory turned to ash.
HANAMURA EXT. - CONTINUOUS
Hanzo runs through the doorway of the pagoda, with Genji watching him from behind on a rooftop. Hanzo approaches the displayed sword and painting.
VOICEOVER: [Hanzo] For years, the bereaved dragon's grief threw the world into discord, and he knew only bitterness and sorrow.
PAINTING MONTAGE
A man in a cloak is talking to the blue dragon from atop a hill.
VOICEOVER: [Hanzo] One day, a stranger called up to the dragon and asked, "Oh dragon lord, why are you so distraught?" The dragon told him, "Seeking power, I killed my brother, but without him, I am lost." The stranger replied...
PAGODA INT. - CONTINUOUS
Hanzo sits down in front of the sword. He lays before him a bowl, a small stand, and a single feather.
VOICEOVER: [Hanzo] "You have inflicted wounds upon yourself. But now, you must heal. Walk the Earth on two feet as I do. Find value in humility, then you will find peace."
Cut to a closeup of Hanzo's face. He is holding incense.
HANZO: You are not the first assassin sent to kill me. And you will not be the last.
Hanzo sets down the incense on the stand. Genji, hiding on the rafters, lights up and drops to the floor. His landing is silent.
GENJI: You are bold to come to Shimada Castle, the den of your enemies.
HANZO: This was once my home. Did you masters not tell you who I was?
Mid-sentence, Hanzo picks up his Storm Bow and fires an arrow at Genji, who dodges it effortlessly.
GENJI: I know who you are, Hanzo.
Hanzo is surprised. He fires another arrow which curves through the air. Genji dodges this one as well.
GENJI: I know you come here every year, on the same day.
Frustrated, Hanzo fires more arrows at Genji, who hides behind a lit pillar.
GENJI: You risk so much to honor someone you murdered.
Genji emerged from cover and throws three Shurikens at Hanzo. They slice the arrows in Hanzo's quiver as he ducks.
HANZO: You know nothing of what happened!
Enraged, Hanzo rolls and fires again at Genji. Though Genji blocks it with his wakizashi, he is knocked to the ground below. Hanzo fires a Scatter Arrow into the pit, but Genji is able to Deflect them. He jumps back to the top layer and vanishes out the door to the balcony. Hanzo follows Genji out to the balcony, but Genji is nowhere in sight.
GENJI: I know you tell yourself that your brother disobeyed the clan.
Hanzo fires an arrow at the wall to his left, thinking Genji was there. He was not.
GENJI: ...and that you had to kill him to maintain order. That it was your duty.
Genji is now standing behind Hanzo.
HANZO: It was my duty, and my burden.
Hanzo turns and fires an arrow. Genji deflects it and it lands on the ground beside him.
HANZO: That does not mean I do not honor him!
Hanzo fires his last arrow. Genji cuts it in half with his wakizashi. Hanzo angrily runs at Genji and tries to use his bow as a club, but Genji fights back effortlessly. After a while Genji kicks Hanzo towards the balcony and jumps onto him with his wakizashi. Hanzo gets pinned over the edge of the balcony with Genji's blade at his throat while he holds it back with his bow.
GENJI: You think you honor your brother Genji with incense offerings? Honor resides in one's actions.
Hanzo notices the deflected arrow still intact stuck in the ground.
HANZO: You dare to lecture me about honor? You are not worthy to say his name!
Hanzo grapples Genji and throws him away, then sprints to the arrow. He picks it up and draws it. His tattoos glow a blue aura as he draws.
HANZO: 龍が我が敵を喰らう! (The dragon consumes my enemies!)
Hanzo fires his Dragonstrike at Genji. Genji pulls out his Dragonblade.
GENJI: 竜神の剣を喰らえ! (Eat the Dragon's blade!)
Genji's green dragon flies between Hanzo's two blue dragons. Genji leads them away from him and back towards Hanzo. Though he pulls back the green dragon, a shocked Hanzo is caught in between the blue ones. He falls to his knees as Genji sheaths his sword.
HANZO: Only a Shimada can control the dragons... who are you?
Genji sprints forward and stops with his wakizashi before Hanzo's throat.
HANZO: Do it, then. Kill me.
GENJI: ...No.
Genji sheaths his wakizashi.
GENJI: I will not grant you the death you wish for. You still have a purpose in this life, brother.
Hanzo is surprised. He stands and turns towards Genji.
HANZO: No... How? My brother is dead.
Genji removes his mask, revealing a pale and damaged face.
HANZO: Genji...
PAINTING MONTAGE
The blue dragon lies with his head down in front of the stranger. Pan up to reveal both dragons' tails, leading to two men standing atop a mountain.
VOICEOVER: [Hanzo] The dragon knelt upon the ground. For the first time, he was able to clearly see the world around him, and he became human. The stranger revealed himself as his fallen brother. Reunited, the two set out to rebuild what they had once destroyed.
PAGODA BALCONY - CONTINUOUS
Genji puts his mask back on.
HANZO: What have you... become?
GENJI: I have accepted what I am, and I have forgiven you. Now you must forgive yourself.
Genji puts his hand on Hanzo's shoulder, then walks towards the edge of the balcony.
GENJI: The world is changing once again, Hanzo, and it's time to pick a side.
Genji leaps onto a nearby building's roof. Conflicted, Hanzo rushes over to retrieve his last arrow and aims it at Genji.
HANZO: Real life is not like the stories our father told us! You are a fool for believing it so!
GENJI: Perhaps I am a fool to think there is still hope for you. But I do.
Genji turns back towards Hanzo. Wavering, Hanzo lets down the arrow without firing.
GENJI: Think on that, brother.
Genji vanishes is a cloud of smoke, leaving behind the feather Hanzo had laid out. Hanzo lowers his bow and replaces his arrow in his quiver before heading back inside. Hanzo goes back inside and kneels before the displayed sword again. Pan up to reveal a large mural of the two dragons.
