Johnny Cash
Over The Next Hill (We’ll Be Home)
[Intro]
I remember, one night, June and I were driving from Denver to Cheyenne, Wyoming where we were gonna do that, uh, show at that rodeo, the... the "Granddaddy of 'em All", you know... the biggest rodeo in the world. And we'd been driving quite a while, traveling quite a while and the night was clear and you could see for miles and we were topping a hill and I said, "I bet we'll be able to see Cheyenne from the top of this hill," and she said, "Yeah, it'd be nice if over this next hill we'd be home." I said, "That's a good song title." And I said, uh, "Make a good spiritual." I stopped the car. I let her drive while I wrote, "Over The Next Hill (We'll Be Home)"
[Verse 1]
By the way the land is laying
I think I'd be safe in saying
That over the next hill, we'll be home
It's a straight and narrow highway
No detours and no byways
And over the next hill, we'll be home
[Chorus]
From the prophets I've been hearing
I would say the end is nearing
For I see familiar landmarks all along
By the dreams that I've been dreaming
There will come a great redeeming
And over the next hill, we'll be home
[Verse 2]
By the speed that we've been making
I would say there's no mistaking
That over the next hill, we'll be home
There's a place that we are nearing
That so many have been fearing
And over the next hill, we'll be home
[Chorus]
When we get there, we're all hoping
That we'll find the gate is open
And there'll be a refuge from the coming storm
For the way's been long and weary
But at last, the end is nearing
And over the next hill, we'll be home
