Tom Rosenthal
Painter on a Cliff
I saw you down by Bessy's Cove
With your eyes to the sea unfolding to the shore
I had never seen a painter on a cliff before
And there you stood in a myriad of blues
With the light on your back saying "I'm just passing through"
Like nothing in the world could ever get you
You were tiny in the mountain of sky
But master in the act of passing tide
I saw a glimpse of the other side
Where rhythms are not skewed
More of me in solitude
Find a place to rest your scars
The beauty of a single task
Uninterrupted by it all
A brighter sun may someday shine
But when hand and brush combine
To mark the day and also leave it all behind
The finest morning I ever did see
And I knew right then that what I saw was bliss
A painter on a cliff
