Loudon Wainwright III
So Good So Far (Live)
Take a look inside the hole in my guitar
From inside there strings sound good so far
You know, over the years this ax has taken some whacks
And inside you can see where they've glued and they've sealed the cracks
Out of this hole have come my hottest licks
Down this hole I've dropped my flattest pics
This machine has been my greatest boon
Even though I still can't keep the thing in tune
You know I got my first guitar at age thirteen
On it's nylon strings I learned the Third Man Theme
Then I heard Leadbelly and Ramblin' Jack
After that there was no turnin' back
And they used to say that Clapton, he was God
You know a guitar is shaped a bit like a woman's bod-y
But after seein' footage of Hendrix
I'm convinced that guitars are really dicks
And I admit that my scores were low on my college boards
And I admit I still only know about a dozen chords
Yeah, but it's a cornucopia, this old guitar
Things still keep comin' out so good so far
I got an old D'Angelico f-hole
Yeah, it's stashed under my sister's bed like a box of gold
Yeah, it was in '46 - that's the year of my birth
Y'know that old D'Angelico's gonna outlast me here on this earth
I used to own a Gibson Hummingbird
I wrote a song about that red guitar, perhaps you heard?
Guitars are lost, sold, stolen, some get burned
But when you write one song on one then it's keep's been earned
When I think of all the Martin's that I've had
I realize things haven't been that bad
No, and I've never been to Nazareth, PA
(that's where they make those Martin guitars, you know)
But I just might have to make that pilgrimage one day
What's the difference, what's the model, what's the make?
The Japanese can produce an amazing sounding fake
Go on and ask around, go on and take poll
It all comes down to what comes out of that amp or this hole
This instrument has given me so much
A cross to bear, a briefcase, and a crutch
Yeah, go on and ask me what this instrument can provide
A weapon I can wield, a shield, behind it can I hide
Every dink and scratch and gouge and broken string
This thing has forgiven everything
You know the airlines broke it's neck once, those bastards did
It's cheaper than a car, cleaner than a dog, easier than a kid
I've been lucky with guitars, guitars a good
Oh, I hope my luck holds out, knock on wood (knocks on guitar)
Take a look inside the hole in my guitar
From inside there these strings...
These steel things...
These steel strings still sound good, so good so far
So good so far
So good so far
So good so far
