Lee Hazlewood
I’m Gonna Fly
[Monologue]
Dirk Thornton thinks he's a goose
It's alright though
'Cause we let him
We all know that gooses don't hurt nobody
'Cept themselves
Sometimes
'Course we all do admit that Dirk's a little different
'Long about the first day of winter
Every year for as long as I can remember
Dirk, like all good gooses, decides to fly south
Now he goes home
And he packs himself six or eight peanut butter sandwiches
And he puts 'em in this brown paper sack
Kisses his wife and his kids goodbye
And he walks about a mile and a half from his house
And climbs up to the top of this big hill
And he jumps off
It's a kind of a beautiful sight to see
Dirk come barrelin' off the top of that hill
His arms a-flappin' in the breeze
And the sound of them peanut butter sandwiches
Bangin' around inside that brown paper bag
Well I'll tell you it'll bring tears to your eyes
Last winter Dirk flew
Oh, about uh, six feet
'Fore he went and crashed
In those peanut butter sandwiches
Dirk Thornton thinks he's a goose
It's alright though
'Cause we let him
{Verse 1}
Valley's low and the mountain's high
Sure as you're born, I'm gonna fly
One of these days I'm gonna fly
Big girls weep, little girls cry
It's always been, don't ask me why
One of these days I'm gonna fly
[Chorus]
To a place where men are free
To a place where it's alright to be
Just an average guy
Who likes to fly
[Verse 2]
Some folks cuss, some folks lie
Sure as you're born, I'm gonna fly
One of these days I'm gonna fly
It's cold in March, hot in July
It's always been, don't ask me why
One of these days I'm gonna fly
[Chorus]
To a place where men are free
To a place where it's alright to be
Just an average Guy
Who likes to fly
[Interlude]
[Verse 3]
Big dogs bark, little dogs try
Sure as you're born, I'm gonna fly
One of these days I'm gonna fly
Some chickens lay, some chickens lie
It's always been, don't ask me why
One of these days I'm gonna fly
[Chorus]
To a place where men are free
To a place where it's alright to be
Just an average guy
Who likes to fly
