Frankenstein-A New Musical World Premiere Cast
Track 20: The Workings of the Heart
[Alphonse, spoken]
Alphonse Frankenstein kindly requests the honor of your presence at the wedding of his son, Victor, to his ward, Elizabeth Lavenza

[Elizabeth]
He's here with me
But sees me not
He loves but cannot give
He seeks the mysteries of life
Without first knowing what it means
To live

A brilliant mind, such gifted hands
A master of his art
And yet he can't understand
The workings of the heart

You need not face the world alone
Or keep your secrets locked inside
Love can weather any storm
If you trust in you and I

How can we live?
How can we love?
Our souls a world apart
Your noblest dreams are not above
The workings of the heart
[Victor]
I've lost my way
So long ago
Too many sins to now confess
Though now you can still touch me so
Through the pain and emptiness

[Elizabeth]
You needn't fear tomorrow
I love the man you are
Your heart is one that follows
A bright but distant star

[Victor]
How can I care for any other life
With you my world begins anew
While I was chasing dreams across the night
I couldn't see, as now I see, my only dream is you

[Elizabeth]
Always I'd known you'd say these words to me
I've known the goodness in you all our lives
Don't blame yourself for what you cannot be

[priest, spoken]
Dearly beloved, we are gathered here today before god, to unite this man and this woman, in holy matrimony
[Elizabeth]
We needn't fear tomorrow

[Victor]
With you my world begins anew

[Elizabeth]
True love will never die

[Victor]
You are my only guiding star

[Elizabeth]
With all these dreams to follow

[Victor]
Am I too late to live this dream?

[Elizabeth]
Please promise me you'll try

[Victor]
To know

[both]
The workings of the heart
[Victor]
So soon the end to all this madness

[Elizabeth]
Oh, I so want to believe you

[Victor]
Never again will you know sadness

[Elizabeth]
To hold you fast and never leave you

[both]
Through darkest nights and lost days
Our hearts will love for always
That's something even death cannot undo

[Victor, spoken]
It was planned for us to spend the first night of our union in a villa on shores of Lake Geneva. From there I would be sure to see his approach, and I could go out to meet my fate and Elizabeth would be spared the sight of it
