Animal Farm: Chapter 15
High above, vultures are targeting the farmhouse.
Often they were seen lying in Jones’ cot in the Manor House and playing cards and sipping beer.
So that night was a night of celebration in the Manor Farm, boars in coats and suits, while the sows with Mrs. Jones’ dresses and ribbons, an army of dogs, elephants, snakes, tigers, and vultures guarding them ferociously, bottles of whisky, rum, and champagne. Bruce stood up for a toast to Squealer, “To the health of my much-trusted friends and comrades in arms, Minimus, Scar, Snowball, and Squealer!” and a blaring roar of shouting broke out from the pigs. Whеn Bruce took his seat, Squealеr, sycophantic as always rose from his seat for a second toast. “We will give you the new toast as we said it. Fill your mugs to the brim, gentleboars! Here is my toast to the prosperity of Animal Farm once again!" Followed by another thunderous roar of shouting. When he sat down, Squealer caught an envious stare from Minimus. It was quite obvious that with Bruce as the leader, Squealer would enjoy a great deal of power. And one pig in particular didn’t appreciate it.

Minimus was determined to hold the reigns of power in his own hands, alone. So, drunken with greed and ambition, one June night he made his first move. He crept to the Manor House and had a couple of words with Bruce. Minimus slowly, but deliberately started poisoning Bruce’s mind against Squealer.

“Jealousy and lust for power have intoxicated him. It pains me much to say, but yes, I’ve got sources warning me that Squealer is not to be trusted.”

“Nonsense! I have faith in him.” Bruce roared.

Minimus threw him a side-wise glance, “Life is a huge price to pay for your faith, Comrade Bruce?” Bruce was silent.

“Time is there comrade, but in a short supply. Squealer has already started preparing for the military coup. It’s either kill or get killed!”

Then the barn door creaked open and Minimus melted away into the shadows leaving Bruce alone. He was trying to marshal his thoughts. Squealer, a traitor? No! It’s impossible, Bruce consoled himself. But suddenly a disturbing thought slipped into his mind: What if it is true? Then he quickly swam out of the dilemma and went to the bedroom.

For Minimus that was a sleepless night. He was pacing around the yard, thinking about his next move. His plan was clear: divide and rule. He knew it wouldn’t take long. He had known Bruce for a long time and could see he was already crumbling. He kept on injecting suspicion and hate. And one fine day he got lucky.

“I can see a fire of ambition blazing in Squealer’s eyes. It won’t be long before jealousy and hatred come with the dagger and stab us dead.” Bruce was silent. Could it be? The very pig he had trusted so much, could he betray? Or was it a slight misunderstanding? But one can never tell. Time and again the iron rule of ‘throne or coffin’ had proved itself. Minimus fed the growing fire. “Think of it again, comrade. Treachery against us is treachery against late Comrade Napoleon, treachery against wise Old Major, treachery against the sacred laws of Animalism!” It was more than Bruce could bear. The rapidly thinning strand of faith snapped altogether.

That same night Squealer was called for a ‘strictly confidential’ meeting. Unsuspecting as always, Squealer fell into the trap. After a few words of greetings, Minimus went for the kill. He launched a sudden attack on Squealer, accusing him of being a traitor. At first, Squealer furiously denied the accusations. “IMPOSSIBLE!” he let out a roar of shock. Four other porkers who were present let out shrill squeals of accusation. When he finally realized what was going on, Squealer sharply glanced at Bruce, who was silently sitting by the barn window. Squealer fell to Bruce’s feet and cried, “Say comrade it is a lie, a foul joke! Say!” Bruce said nothing. Squealer slowly rose to his feet. “Bruce… you too?” He was unable to believe, or rather refusing to believe what he just witnessed. He was stunned to silence.

Snowball watched in horror as Squealer fought against Bruce. Then, Tamino came to the rescue. Tamino grabbed Snowball out of the farmhouse.

Suddenly, a thunderous voice was ringing in Squealer’s ears for an eternity. “Guards! Go find Snowball and kill him once and for all! Now, Comrade Squealer, I believe it won’t do any good by refusing to acknowledge your guilt. You should have thought about the consequences before you plotted against us. And for this unthinkable treachery, you are condemned to DEATH!”
A distant baying from the dogs, screeching from the vultures, and trumpeting from the elephants was heard. Squealer knew what was coming. He gave one last look at Bruce, who simply refused to meet his long-time pal’s gaze. Minimus gave a sly grin. Then the barn door burst open.

The rest is quite simple. Stunned by the treachery of his much-trusted friend, Bruce lost his heart in ruling. He fell into drinking, and like most animals, he couldn’t handle his drinks properly. Very soon the animals were whispering among themselves about the incompetence of their new ruler. Before long a second vote was taken in the barn. And this time with Squealer out of his way, and Bruce, losing public support rapidly, nothing was in Minimus’s way. Hence it was unanimously agreed that Minimus shall be the next leader. And once again the sheep celebrated with a thunderous bleating of, “Four legs good. Two legs BETTER! Four legs good. Two legs BETTER!”

Squealer on the other hand suffered a very different fate, a rather dreadful one. He was dragged behind the barn, like so many before him. “I’m one of you comrades!” He squealed in pure terror. “I’m one of you!” But the animals were ominously silent. The dogs bayed like wolves menacingly, bristling their mane. The dogs have loud baying and howling revealing themselves as grey wolves but they cannot bark like the puppies. They had seen red, nothing could stop them now, nothing. Minimus uttered a high-pitched squeal. The wolves began howling loudly and the animals watched in horror as a vulture struck the sheep causing the sheep to have warm red blood splattered all over.

Multiple vultures came in and flew around the barn.

Looking to the left from Minimus, Tamino, and Snowball leading a charge of wild animals from the zoos.

War is coming next when Squealer changes Manor Farm to Animal Farm once again.
