[Spoken Intro]
This is a song I learned from an old Leadbelly record
Leadbelly's called the king of the 12-string guitar, and the song is called "Grey Goose". It's about a goose who always survives. People are trying to kill the goose so they can eat it, but in the end, in spite of everything they try, the goose just flies away
One Sunday morning
A preacher went a-hunting
Well he carried 'long his shotgun, Lord, Lord, Lord
And along comes a grey goose, Lord, Lord, Lord
Well the gun went and blew, Lord, Lord, Lord
Down comes a grey goose, Lord, Lord, Lord
It was six weeks a-fallin', Lord, Lord, Lord
We were six weeks a-haulin', Lord, Lord, Lord
Lordy, my wife and your wife
Well they gave a feather pickin'
We were six weeks a-pickin', Lord, Lord, Lord
And we put him on to parboil, Lord, Lord, Lord
There were six weeks of boilin', Lord, Lord, Lord
And they put him on the table, Lord, Lord, Lord
Well the fork couldn't stick him, Lord, Lord, Lord
And the knife wouldn't stick him, Lord, Lord, Lord
Oh the knife wouldn't cut him, Lord, Lord, Lord
Oh the knife wouldn't cut him, Lord, Lord, Lord
And they threw him in the hog-pen, Lord, Lord, Lord
And the hogs couldn't eat him, Lord, Lord, Lord
And he broke the hogs' teeth out
Oh he broke the hogs' teeth out, Lord, Lord, Lord
And they take him to the sawmill, Lord, Lord, Lord
And the saw couldn't cut him, Lord, Lord, Lord
Yeah, he broke the saw's teeth out, Lord, Lord, Lord
He broke the saw's teeth out
And the last time I seen him, Lord, Lord, Lord
He was flying 'cross the ocean, Lord, Lord, Lord
With a long string of goslings
With a long string of goslings, Lord, Lord, Lord
And they're all going quack-quank, Lord, Lord, Lord
Yeah, they're all going quack-quank, Lord, Lord, Lord
Yeah, they're all going quack-quank, Lord, Lord, Lord
Oh, all going quack-quank, Lord, Lord, Lord
He broke the saw's teeth out
Yeah, he broke the saw's teeth out, Lord, Lord, Lord
And the last time I seen him, Lord, Lord, Lord
Well, the last time I seen him
He was flying 'cross the ocean, Lord, Lord, Lord
With a long string of goslings
With a long string of goslings, Lord, Lord, Lord
And they're all going quack-quank, Lord, Lord, Lord
Yeah, they're all going quack-quank, Lord, Lord, Lord
Oh, all going quack-quank, Lord, Lord, Lord
They're all going quack-quank, Lord, Lord, Lord
(Quack-quank)
