Death Cab for Cutie
We Looked Like Giants (The Fillmore, San Francisco 5.04.04)
[Verse 1]
God bless the daylight, the sugary smell of springtime
Remembering when you were mine
In a still suburban town
When every Thursday I'd brave those mountain passes
And you'd skip your early classes
And we'd learn how our bodies worked
[Verse 2]
God damn the black night, with all its foul temptations
I've become what I always hated when I was with you then
We looked like giants in the back of my grey subcompact
Fumbling to make contact as the others slept inside
[Chorus]
Close together there
In a shroud of frost, the mountain air
Began to pass
Through every pane of weathered glass
And I held you closer than anyone would ever guess
[Verse 3]
Do you remember the J.A.M.C.?
And reading aloud from magazines
I don't know about you, but I swear on my name
They could smell it on me
But I've never been too good with secrets
No
[Chorus]
And together there
In a shroud of frost, the mountain air
Began to pass
Through every pane of weathered glass
And I held you closer
[Outro (Spoken)]
Thank you very much
So, uh, we have a friend that's here tonight
That, uh, works for Access Hollywood or something like that
Anyways, and, uh, she was interviewing Barry Manilow
And, uh, as kind of a cool little gift
She gave us a signed photo of, uh, Barry Manilow
Um, you know, he asked
He asked, "Well, who's it for?"
And she said "Well, it's this band called Death Cab for Cutie"
And he was like "Ah, man, they gotta change their name
They gotta change their name, that's not a good name for a band"
So, um, I don't know what to tell you
I guess we're looking for a new name now
If Barry-if Barry-if Barry says it's not working, then it's not working
He wrote Mandy for Christ's sake
He did, you know, he played Mandy on the Jimmy Kimmel show about a month ago
And I was in a hotel room and it was, like, three in the morning
And I, and I actually cried during the course of the performance
So listen, before we play a couple more songs and send you on your way
I wanted to say that we have been on tour for-uh, since February 1st I believe
And this whole time we've had, uh, John Byrd back there doing sound
With the glasses and the beard
We've had Mark Dustin, who's somewhere around here, doing our tour managing, he's been great
And we've had this guy with long hair who miraculously grew it overnight, Andy Hayward, this entire tour
And Sarah doing merch
We'd like to thank you guys, you've been amazing for us these last four months or so
You've made the whole thing worthwhile and easy as it can be
So, here's to you guys
