Georges Brassens
Il Gorilla (English Translation)
Up in a town's square
The bystanders gazed admiringly
At a gorilla, brought there
By some gypsies from a circus
With little sense of decency
The women of that district
Were contemplating the beast
Won't say how, won't say where
Beware of the gorilla!
Suddenly the big cage
Where the animal lived
Burst open, I don't know why
Perhaps they had closed it wrong
And the animal, walking out of it
Said "today I'm going to lose it"
It was talking about his virginity
Which it still lived enslaved to
Bewarе of the gorilla!
The owner thеn started shouting
"My gorilla, beware
He has never seen a monkey
He might confuse you with one"
All the bystanders at this point
Started escaping in every direction
Even the women, thus demonstrating
The difference between plan and action
Beware of the gorilla!
Everyone is running around
To and fro, with big rush
The only ones to linger are an old lady
And a young judge with his robe
Since all the others had fled the scene
The quadrumane sped up
An on the hag and the prosecutor
He brought himself in four leaps
Beware of the gorilla!
"Bah", sighed the old lady, thinking
"That I were still desired
Would be quite the weird thing
And most of all, not desired"
"That I'd be mistaken for a monkey"
Thought the judge, out of breath
"would not be possible, that I'm sure of"
The follow-up ascertains that he was wrong
Beware of the gorilla!
If one of you had to be
Obliged, back to the wall
To assault a judge or an old lady
Of your choice I would be certain
But assumed that the gorilla
Deemed as a majestic he-man
And those who've found out can confirm
It doesn't stand out for his reasoning or his taste
Beware of the gorilla!
In fact it, disregarded the old lady
Starts making its way to the magistrate
Grabs him firmly by an ear
And drags him inside of a meadow
What then had happened in the tall grass
I cannot say in its entirety
But the show was compelling
And there actually was some suspense
Beware of the gorilla!
I'll just say that on the climax
Of the unpleasant and grim ordeal
Whimpered, the judge like a little calf
And between the breaks he cried for his mother
Cried for his mother just like that guy
Who, the day before, just like a chicken
With quite the interesting verdict
Had his neck cut off
Beware of the gorilla!
