Stephen Sondheim
Rainbows
[BAKER, spoken]
Maybe we just weren't meant to have children.

[BAKER'S WIFE, spoken]
Don't say that. Of course we were meant to have children. We mustn't give up hope.

[BAKER, spoken]
It's too painful to hope. I'd rather stop hoping than be disappointed.

[BAKER'S WIFE, spoken]
And I'd rather be disappointed than give up hope.

[BAKER]
You're always expecting rainbows

[BAKER'S WIFE]
You're always expecting rain

[BAKER]
I used to expect a rainbow
It's no longer worth the pain
Can't sit around sighing for
The dreams that won't come true
They're not worth the trying for
A few less dreams will have to do
Who says that we need a rainbow?
We've lots to be glad about
We're not guaranteed a rainbow
Be grateful the sun is out
As long as we have each other
Wouldn't you agree?
That's rainbow enough
At least for me

[BAKER'S WIFE, spoken]
That's your idea of reality, isn't it? Life's a mess, so settle for less. Maybe you don't really want to have children.

[BAKER, spoken]
Don't say that, of course I do. Yes, I want children.

[BAKER'S WIFE, spoken]
I don't think you want the responsibility

[BAKER, spoken]
I do. I do. But...

[BAKER'S WIFE, spoken]
But?

[BAKER, spoken]
Can't we just be happy the way we are?
[BAKER'S WIFE, spoken]
Are we happy?

(sung)
Stop taking away our rainbow
Don't tell me it's all in vain
Why would you expect a rainbow?
I think you enjoy the pain
You chip away long enough
At every dream we've made
Things soon will go wrong enough
That more than dreams are going to fade

Don't say they just last a minute
That rainbows are only air
Don't tell me there's nothing in it
We've got to have hopes to share
The longer we love each other
More and more it seems
Love isn't enough
We need some dreams
