[JOE]
So long, Dad

I forgot my diploma

[TAYLOR]
Lucky you remembered that!

(MARJORIE goes to TAYLOR, throws her arms around him from behind, and holds both hands on his heart.)

[MARJORIE]
You're hurt. Don't let him hurt you

[TAYLOR]
Doc isn't much good without a shingle

(JOE waves at his father as he starts out. TAYLOR calls to him, a tired smile on his face.)

Don't take any wooden nickels!

(JOE is gone. TAYLOR sinks down at his desk.)

[MARJORIE]
A fellow needs a girl
To sit by his side
At the end of a weary day
To sit by his side
And listen to him talk
And agree with the things he'll say
(TAYLOR's head falls to his arms.)
