Terry Jacks
Of Cities and Escapes
[Verse 1]
I live in a one-room apartment, with windows on one side
I stare through the glass 'cross the water, to where the big, ugly city lies
I hear it, I feel it, I read it, with my eyes
And I'm lost in the crowd of the city, a life I despise
[Verse 2]
I wake with a groan, it's the phone, what news can it bring (shh), let it ring
The paper lies crumpled on the floor, politics and war, and there goes the door
And I sit and watch it all go by, wonder why I can't go
I'm caught in the grip of the city, madness and smog
[Bridge]
Hide my mind, out of the reach of time
I'm movin' far beyond the city and its power, now it's gone
And as my wings ascend, I feel them catch the wind
Da da da da da da da
Da da da da da
Da da da da da
Da da da da da
Above the traffic's holler, I watch the race for dollars
The angry-sweated collars, as people waste their hours
Then, there came a time when, I knew it all was ending
I felt my wings descend, if only I could stay up another day
[Outro]
I live in a one-room apartment, with windows on one side
I stare through the glass 'cross the water, to where the big, ugly city dies
