Quentin Tarantino
Scene 8 One Severed Limb
We pick up instantly inside the cab of the upside down truck.
Wray:
Cherry?
Cherry:
I thought you said if you saw a deer, you shouldn’t fucking swerve!
Wray:
That wasn’t a deer.
Just then, something breaks the passenger side window, a boiled hand quickly reaches in at Cherry.
Wray:
Cherry! Cherry! No!
The hand pulls Cherry out of the window. Wray scrambles out of the truck, grabbing and cocking a high powered rifle. He quickly walks into the woods, where the “thing” took Cherry. He pulls the gun up to his shoulder and aims down the site. You can hear Cherry scream. The camera is now Wray’s scope, which is night vision. Wray fires at the creatures which turn around instantly and it can now be seen that they’re human (or ex-human). Wray is confused, the body snatchers begin running away, Wray continues to fire. Wray looks down and sees Cherry’s body laying down in shock, with her right leg removed.
Wray:
Palomita!
Quick cut to Cherry being pushed through a hospital entrance by hospital staff, Wray following immediately behind.
Wray:
Don’t let her die on me, Block!
Bill:
What do we have?
EMT:
Car accident. Heavy contusions about the torso, possible spinal trauma... (the EMT rapidly moves back a sheet covering Cherry’s leg and slowly says) One severed limb.
Bill:
Where’s the leg?
Wray:
Three sickos attacked her. I shot at them. I never miss.
The EMT open's Cherry's eyelids. Bill puts a thermometer in his mouth, Wray leans in to talk closer to Bill.
Wray:
They took the leg with them.
At the same door the EMT’s pushed Cherry through, Sheriff Hague and his two deputies, Tolo and Carlos, walk in. Wray notices and turns away.
Sheriff Hague:
You’ll have to come with us, Wray. We need to talk about this, you know?
Bill:
He has to sign her in.
Sheriff Hague:
Do what now?
Bill:
Well, he’s with her. He’s responsible for her.
Hague: (grabs the clipboard from Bill
He can fill this out after we talk. Let’s go.
Wray: (being held by Hague as they’re walking)
Okay. Okay, fuck!
Camera cuts to a shot of the hallway, a surgeon pokes his head out from a doorway.
Surgeon:
Hey Block, you want to be here for this? (camera shows Joe lying in the hospital bed) Taking your friends arm off?
Bill:
No, you do it.
Surgeon: (shrugging)
Suit yourself.
Camera cuts to Sheriff Hague and Wray.
Hague:
What are you doing with a rifle, Wray?
Wray:
Nothing. Just thinking about maybe doing some hunting when the season breaks.
Hague:
Come on, Wray. You know you’re not supposed to be doing that stuff anymore.
Wray:
Not even hunting?
Hague:
Not even hunting. And you know that. Not with your history. And here I stick my neck out for you. I stick it out far. Now you’ve got a gal in your wrecked truck with a missing leg? A missing leg that’s now missing? And here you’re saying in front of everybody that someone up and snatched it? And that you shot at ‘em with a gun that you never should’ve had in the first place? And that now they’re gone?
Wray:
What if I find the leg?
Hague:
So, now you know where it is? You’ll tell us where it is, give us a full confession, you’re saying?
Hospital employees begin wheeling patients by. These patients have the abscesses like Joe and like the ones that Wray saw when he fired at them at the wrecked truck.
Wray:
Sheriff, can we finish this conversation somewhere else?
Hague: (already removing handcuffs from his belt)
My thought exactly.
Hague puts a cuff on Wray as he clenches his fist.
