The Manufactured Threat
All that he does is chip away
Each day he sticks to his routine:
(The existential threat that I always feel)
Putting the pieces on
Building a big machine
(Nothing’s happened yet today and yet I have to feel)
He ran out of room inside his room
(Danger near, danger here)
And so he moved it all outside
(Nowhere to escape to and nobody there to hear)
(As I now scream in fear)
Now it's a bit too big
(Scream in fear)
Now it's a mile wide
(The existential threat is drawing very, very near)
(And they all look away, look away)
The family vans across the desert
(Can't you see the existential threat is on its way?)
Follow signs to park and stare
(The existential threat)
Nobody says hello
(That I tend to feel)
Nobody knows he's there
(When I’m walking down the street or right behind the wheel)
They just look at the blinking lights and greebles
(Turning left, turning right)
Interlocking arms of steel
(Trying to escape the cloud that’s close enough to feel)
And they think:
(And you may laugh out loud)
Nothing could be so big
(Laugh out loud)
Nothing could be so real
(The existential threat is always hanging about)
They think:
(And you may say go way, say go way)
One million springs
(The existential threat is never going away)
And spinning things. It's quite a view
(Doctor gave me these, I said "what are these?")
We have no clue...
(He said that they’ll cure an existential type disease)
What does it do?
(Doubt they will, doubt they will)
That's the beauty of it
(But I’m keen to try whatever, gimme that pill)
It doesn't do anything
(And he said here’s the bill, here’s the bill)
(In the end they didn’t work)
Doesn't do anything, doesn't do anything
(I paid the whole bill, because no)
(How should I react, under this attack?)
He made his own night-vision goggles
(Even when I’m standing up I feel I’m on my back)
Now he lurks inside the frame
(Quagmire here)
Perfecting it from within
(Quagmire there)
Forgetting his own name
(I cannot elucidate the danger that is always there)
(But it is looming large, extra large)
All that he knows is that it needs him
(My semi-automatic weapon ready to discharge)
All it knows is he needs it
(But it’s a futile act)
Every piston
(Better pack)
Every single little bit
(The existential threat is bulletproof and looming large)
(Sartre and Camus seemed to understand)
The government people in black helicopters
(Something close to what I’m feeling though they were in France)
Try to snoop around
(Deux Magots)
I'm so sorry, but he needs the extra parts
(They would go)
He takes the choppers down
(Each comparing existential threats they came to blows)
(And then the crowds came near just to cheer)
Now there are tanks on the horizon
(For the greatest existential threatened philosophe)
Asking what are his demands?
(And it is comforting)
Not one of them understands
(Comforting)
Nobody understands
(Then the comfort starts to very quickly fade away)
All the megaphones scream:
One million gears
Perhaps our fears are coming true
What does it do?
What does it do?
(Did I wake you up? Sorry if I did)
That's the beauty of it
(Guess I woke you up and also woke your little kid)
It doesn't do anything
(Threat outside, let me hide)
(Just until the danger passes)
Doesn't do anything
(Then I’ll go outside)
(And have to come again, once again)
Lost in solipsism
(The existential threat is at your patio door)
He then slowly pulls a lever
(And do not let it in, let it in)
Which sets off a mechanism
(When you fight the existential threat you will not win)
Which does nothing whatsoever
But the nothing that it does
Negates the everything we know
(The existential threat that I always feel)
Because it's screaming "Just because!"
(Lots of things have happened and I seek an even keel)
Because it's neither friend or foe
(Danger near, danger far)
And so we label it a menace
(Nowhere to escape to and I’m racing in my car)
Or a grandiose work of art
(As I now scream in fear, scream in fear)
From its finale to its genesis
(The existential threat is drawing very, very near)
We slowly pull it all apart
(As I now drive away, by the way)
(Can’t you see the existential threat is on its way)
That's the beauty of it
It doesn't do anything, do anything
Doesn't do anything, doesn't do anything
