There are two main components to the artwork: the cat statue and the column
In regards to the cat statue, the band has stated how it had, oddly enough, continuously appeared around them at various stages of production. Lead singer/songwriter Michael Coomers said "I had already taken the photo of the cat that is the album art in Tucson. When we got to the [Austin] studio the exact same cat sculpture (spray painted black) was on the tape machine. Then when we went to mix in Joshua Tree at Hi-Dez recordings (with Nathan Loveland) someone was selling the same cat sculpture on the side of a dirt road. I guess plaster cats are kinda ubiquitous but we took it as a sign that we were on the right track."
The column is an architectural reference, as noted in closing track "Queen of Mosquitos", to Corinthian columns, as studied by Coomers during his time at college
