AOTY #9: Perfume Genius - Too Bright
Everybody needs a voice. Whether it emanates from their mouth or they take the words of others, we all need vocal representation. Over the course of his musical career, Perfume Genius has long spoken for the marginalized — the gay community, those suffering from substance and other forms of abuse, or just those who feel lost. On Too Bright, Mike Hadreas finally speaks for himself
All you need to know about Too Bright can be learned from watching his indescribable performance on the Late Show. Visually, he presents himself with no refutation of who he is. Vocally, he wavered, whispered, wailed his way into leaving David Letterman without words
In speaking for the voiceless, he gave them one by taking away the voices of those who haven’t needed spoken for. This year he proved to be a beacon of light. And sometimes that light shone bright, too bright, for everybody to understand. But for those who needed it, their queen reigned benevolently
