Lil Peep
Lil Peep (R.I.P.)
During November 2017 emo rapper Lil Peep died from overdosing on fentanyl laced Xanax, fentanyl is 50-100x stronger than heroin, it's most likely that he probably overdosed accidentally

While it was a little blasphemous, Peep did compare himself to Kurt Cobain who infamously committed suicide at age 27

In punk and grunge, rock songs titled with motifs like Nirvana's "I Hate Myself And Want To Die" were standard. As rap music continues changing and evolving, alternative emo/grunge rap is merging into the rap world, meaning artists are becoming more comfortable discussing topics that include their own personal problems, relationship issues, depression, and mental health.

Genius posted a vid about "How Lil Peep, Lil Uzi Vert, and Trippie Redd Are Bringing Back Emo" (to a certain extent).

Depression has been a recurring theme in hip-hop-rap for years and it blends well with the alternative rock that was coming from rising SoundCloud rapper Lil Peep, we should realize these artists truly put their hearts on their sleeves in their songs. While his songs have been noted for being particularly emo and slightly grunge, his tweets and Instagram posts before a concert led fans to be worried about Lil Peep who overdosed before his concert. Source: Late into the night on November 15, 2017, Lil Peep passed away due to a drug overdose. The tragic news was confirmed by his manager on Instagram. He was 21. Whether or not it was intentional or not is unknown, however, six Xanax would usually not qualify for a suicide attempt, regardless it seems as if unfortunately, Lil Peep got a bad batch of Fentynal laced Xanax and overdosed and died

Whether Lil Peep intentionally killed himself or not, this is a tragedy and should be a big reminder to be extra careful, do research about your drugs, research dosages before dosing

Lil Peep had obviously struggled with Suicidal thoughts in the past. tweeting: "I deleted pray I die I'm sorry"

Suicide among rap artists is nothing new, in 2012 Capital STEEZ passed away on December 24, 2012 at the age of 19 from an apparent suicide

With new wave rappers such as Lil Uzi Vert and XXXTenacation shifting trends, baring more emotion in their music it makes it easier for upcoming artists to speak about their own relationship problems, drug abuse, and depression

However Kid Cudi pioneered putting his feelings on the line with raps people could relate to: "In 2008, Kid Cudi announced his musical presence to the world with the gloomy, melodic masterpiece "Day N Night." Cudi wrote the song while dealing with the death of his uncle, and in the years that followed its release, he battled drugs and depression. In an April interview with the folks at Billboard, "The Pursuit of Happiness" performer explained that appreciating the luxuries and comforts he's been able to afford himself and his family helped shake him out of his depression, something he had used drugs to deal with in the past. "I have everything I ever dreamed of in terms of stability. But I hadn’t been living that reality, because depression was fucking me up," he explained. "So this year I chose to be happy. I just woke up." --- source Lil Peep was at the forefront of popularizing the subgenre of Alternative/Emo/Rap music all while popularizing an emo, punk aesthetic. This style has been popular among self-proclaimed "Rockstar" artists like Lil Uzi, Trippie Redd and rappers like Lil Pump and Smokepurpp (Face Tattoos, Dyed Hair, etc.)

Even OG Hip Hop pioneers dealt with "suicidal thoughts", like 2Pac on "Nothing 2 Lose":

> The only way to change me is maybe blow my brains out
Stuck in the middle of the game to get the pain out
Pray to my God everyday, but he don't listen

And the legendary Biggie Smalls on "Suicial Thoughts": > When I die, fuck it, I wanna go to hell
'Cause I'm a piece of shit, it ain't hard to fuckin' tell > I swear to God I want to just slit my wrists and end this bullshit
Throw the Magnum to my head, threaten to pull shit
And squeeze until the bed's completely red
Suicide's on my fuckin' mind, I wanna leave

Emo pioneer icons such as Kid Cudi and Kanye West have addressed their struggles with anxiety, PTSD, and depression in the past: Particularly on the game-changing emotional album assisted and co-written by Kid Cudi 808’s & Heartbreak.

Cudi raps some concerning, worrisome, and depressing lines on On “Don’t Play This Song”:
> Reckless and young and my, my mom's calling
Think I should hit decline
I'm numb faced while I'm thinking 'bout suicide

Kid Cudi even had to check in for a brief stint at rehab in 2017, and same with Kanye. Cudi created a music video titled "Mr. Rager" featuring symbolism of Cudi slowly killing off himself seemingly as a result of his own drug (ab)use. Kid Cudi's have helped countless fans who struggle with similar substance abuse problems, depression, anxiety, addiction, suicidal thoughts and more. Do we need to realize these are legitimate cries for help from these artists? Even the braggadocios Kanye West admitted his struggles with depression after the loss of his beloved mother, Donda West.

As Kanye rapped about struggling Donda's death on "Clique":
"Went through, deep depression when my mama passed
Suicide, what kinda talk is that?"

Are these lyrics cries for help from the artists to their fans? Are these artists just releasing their inner demons on these tracks or is it deeper than that? Atlanta R&B and trap rapper Future has many songs and lyrics that concern his fans and make them wonder about the state of his mental health, including, to name a few: "Codeine Crazy", "Hardly", "Perkys Calling", "Mask Off" and "Substitute Everything". DJ Booth posted an article titled “Future’s Drug Addiction is Killing Him & We Love It” which is sad but true, we seem to bask in his pain however, it’s not something to joke about. Future is profiting from his pain but it's no laughing matter. Future has expressed his deep emotional distress on many tracks

Lil Peep posted one of his last Instagram videos, a video of him eating Xanax bars which many people suspect were pressed with an extremely deadly and potent chemical Fentanyl
