LANKS
My Artistic Idol
I was a fussy kid
But somehow you don’t remember
I hated olive dip and hummus
But you pretend that
It never happened
Avocado or salmon
I spat it in the sink
There’s a happy hole there in your memory
For all the bad I did

I was teenage angst
But somehow you corrected me
All your olive branches sealed in Christmas wrapping
Brought to me
A purpose – pens and paper
Watercolour stationery
Somehow you knew that all I needed
Was my creativity

Well I’m proud of you
A mind that warped and grew
A view that twists in all the right places
Shines a light on all the sad faces
My best friends still tell me I’m wasting
Every moment apart from you
A view that twists in all the right places
Shines a light on all the sad faces
My artistic idol unwavering
I am a millennial
And my life is incredible
It’s hard as water the worst of times
And on this rock the ocean climbs
You took me here to paint the world
The way you did since you were a girl
You showed me how to find the colours
Hidden in the sands. It’s not the surface here that matters

Well I’m proud of you
A mind that warped and grew
A view that twists in all the right places
Shines a light on all the sad faces
My best friends still tell me I’m wasting
Every moment apart from you
A view that twists in all the right places
Shines a light on all the sad faces
My artistic idol unwavering
