[Spoken Word: Sara Watkins]
Little something that's been on my heart
[Verse 1: Sara Watkins]
Anthony, Anthony
Oh, he said that he can't love me
But I think he can
Yes, I think he can
And I told him that just before he ran
Just before he ran
Mmm-mmm
Mmm-mmm
Mmm-mmm
Mmm-mmm
[Verse 2: Sara Watkins]
And he's not lookin' back
He's not lookin' back
'Cause he doesn't want anything I have
Or anything I am
Anthony, Anthony
Oh, he said that he can't love me
Anthony
[Spoken Word: Chris Thile & Sara Watkins]
You know what's hardest about writing instrumentals?
Is, uh, naming them
Naming them is very hard
For instance, that last song, I bet you can guess what it's called
I know!
What's it called Sara?
I know what it's called
It's called du-du-du-du-du-du
No (No?!)
That's not what it's called, it's called Anthony (Ugh)
Um, because of the rather significant amount of times that you say the name Anthony
That's the nice thing, that's the easy thing about writing vocal songs
Naming them is usually kind of a slam dunk
Something is repeated often enough
Generally it raises it's hand; volunteers to be the name of the song
So, uh, I don't know if you remember, a while back there was a song
Where a whole lot of times, this thing happened
Happened a lot of times, and yet, that song is not called
But rather, "The Smoothie Song"
Which is one of the most god-awful instrumental titles in the history of not singing
That's how bad it is
Something's gotta be pretty bad to get a sad bass sound
Schatzi's auditioning for the David Letterman Show
So, we've been a band for twenty-five years now, since (Thank you)
Since we were quite wee
And, uh, naming instrumental songs was even harder than it is now
We were actually pretty good at it, back in the day
I feel like there were some pretty okay instrumental titles back then
"Simple Song for Salty the Singing Seesaw?"
That was bad one, that was bad (That was bad)
Pretty bad
Sean had a couple good ones, "Dragging On Empty," that was pretty nice
"For All It's Worth," that was a pretty good title
"For All It's Worth," not bad (Not bad)
Let's walk through the instrumental titles tonight
We started with, "Scotch And Chocolate," that's a solid
Scotch, chocolate, good on their own, better together
Uh, yeah
That song sounds tasty
See, it's good enough to receive a happy bass sound (Twice)
Um, where is of course the next one, that's like a two thumbs-up
Ninety-five point instrumental title in my opinion (Yeah)
We came up with it together, it was collaborative
As scotch and chocolate are themselves collaborative
That's right, maybe that's why we did it
But then yeah, as we mentioned, "Smoothie Song," just [] ugh
That's more or less my fault, I wrote the song
I didn't come up with the name, nor did anyone on stage
It's a long story, and it's boring
Even more boring than this one
Um, but uh, I suppose I'm ultimately at fault because I approved it
As the author of the song
The next title, "Ode To A Butterfly"
Ahh
The girls like it, the ladies
Couple bros out there like it
Alright
I feel like it's gaining popularity the longer we stand here
The longer we stand here, we can just keep rockin' here
See, I love butterflies, love a damn butterfly, it's great
My fear is that I was sixteen or seventeen when I wrote that song, uh
And I named it, uh, thusly
Because there was a butterfly banging into the window in front of me
As I was writing the song
I fear, um, that the innocence and optimism of youth could have colored my perception of that insect
And it could have been a moth
And that's why I have misgivings about the title
Could've been "Ode to a Frickin' Moth"
But it's not, "Ode To A Butterfly"
One thumb up, one thumb, sort-of sagging
Oh, interesting, a rare sort-of in between, a rare
Just sort-of hanging out bass sound
What Chris is trying to say is we have improved over the years
Steady improvement
Steady improvement of our instrumental titles
And, um
Some people ask us why we took six and a half years off
And it's because we ran out of instrumental titles
We had none left, and the reason we got back together was we found some (Two!)
We found two, that was enough to carry on (Let's get the band back together)
Let's get the band back together, y'all!
And now we're here
And now we're here
At the beautiful Fox Theater in Oakland
We are here
Y'all are here
Wait 'til you here the title we have prepared for you
I think you're gonna like it
Chris, you've taken us most of the way here, why don't you unveil it
May we present to you: the crown jewel
