The Drones
I Walked Across the Dam
I remember the day
That they walked me away
Like I remember the day that I came
The light on your face
The open spaces
I felt surely that I was saved
You gave me a bed
And some space for my things
A little money and I made some friends
And we grew a little closer
As the winter blew in
Summer found us bound together
I've asked for nothing when the chance of that seemed so remote
You found me guilty of love as sure as life alone
You played me like a bow
And if the music I made made your stomach turn
Well you got what you deserved
I suppose
Well you see what you see
But have you ever been fleeced
Of the one thing that you cannot fake?
I've seen my innocence go
And then come back again
As though it was angry I had left it for dead
But I want not to feel so dirty
I have lied and cheated
That much is true
Don't let it change the way you feel about me
Or I might go changing
The way I feel
About you
..........
I could feel the air was rising
Now that the stranger had a name
My thoughts weren't put at ease
Watching the curtains skip their rails
Yeah I could feel the air was rising
Now that the stranger had a name
My thoughts were never easy
But now they'd never seemed
So inflamed
And I started having that same old dream
About women ringing bells
On a hill over a prison
Full of empty cells
I stayed until the lawmen came
A fool under your spell
..........
Well this morning they went and they opened
The great iron gates
And I walked across the dam a free man
I let that morning sun burn the back of my neck
As though behind me burned all the fires of hell
To my left the river ran heavy into the trough
While after the dam there ran a trickle
It should not have bothered
I came to drunk in some motel that I won't name
While the wall paper went down peeling a leper's dream
Onto my road kill carpet
All frostbit by the moonbeams
I got to thinking of you and this day new
Until the light came and I rose up
As though inside me burned all of the fires of hell
Yours have just begun
