The Top 4 Remixes of All Time
The idea of remixing, taking a popular song and playing with its constituent parts in order to create something new and original, has been popular for quite some time. Remixes are an excellent way of making a song that we’ve all heard before sound fresh and original, as well as breathing new life into classic tracks that we otherwise might have forgotten about altogether. Below are four of the greatest remixes of all time from across a variety of different genres
Everything But The Girl – ‘Missing’, Todd Terry Remix
This is one of those remixes which proved to be so successful that many people incorrectly think that it is the original. In actual fact, the original is a folksy pop tune, whereas Todd Terry’s remix uses a percussion loop sampled from ‘Love & Happiness’ by River Ocean. By combining this loop with the original guitar parts, and cutting them up into a much more rhythmical pattern, Todd Terry created a new version which is much more catchy and memorable than the, already excellent, original
Robin S. – ‘Show Me Love’, Stonebridge Remix
This track has become something of a classic, and even the tale of how it came to be is memorable, Stonebridge asked their record label, Champion Records, if they had any demos lying around that could be used as the basis for a remix. This version has little in common with the original, which had a heavy Euro-pop vibe to it and was notable for the absence of any hooks. The remix on the other hand incorporates a Korg Organ hook that has become one of the most instantly recognizable samples in music. Since its inception, this record has been remixed, sampled, and covered in a number of different genres
Nightcrawlers – ‘Push the Feeling On’, MKDub of Doom Remix
This one is a serious contender for the title of ‘most remixed song of all time’. The original track was a wonderful, disco-infused club track that sounds very different from this remix. MKDub of Doom employed his signature style and techniques, cutting up the vocals and splicing them together to create something completely new and original. He is an artist who, over the last few decades, has built a well-deserved reputation for producing some of the best remixes that the world has ever seen
Sneaker Pimps – ‘Spin Spin Sugar’, Armand’s Dark Garage Mix
Armand Van Helden was one of the biggest dancefloor artists of the 90s. His remixes were a common sound on dancefloors and in clubs across the world. Listening to his remix of this Sneaker Pimps classic it isn’t difficult to see why, it contains everything that a great remix should, an excellent percussive beat, good hooks, and an excellent intuition when it comes to vocal arrangements. 20 years after its release, this remix is still a guaranteed crowd pleaser
