John Grant
Yawning Abyss
Do you remember neon signs
Like Factory Tile
Which is in South Bend, Indiana, but it doesn't rotate anymore?

We drove along the boulevards
All lined with ruins of Victorian-style horrors
And those everyday street warriors

We floated by like dreams
Kaleidoscopic remnants of those dreams
Called nightmares where the light is a strange color
Like before a deadly twister is

Come sink with me into the yawning abyss
You have to bе a crazy person
To assert you nevеr wanted this
Come jump with me into the maw of the big, yawning abyss
Don't be silly now, you know you've always wanted this

We sat in googie cafés
And you had that look upon your face
Because the autumn never came
The autumn never came

I thought about ceramic figurines and bomb pops
And the summer splashing in the pool
And listening to the radio
Supperware, terrariums, and pink scotch, yes i'd take
Now your father's home
Turn off the TV, wash your hands, it's suppertime

Everybody says they didn't see it coming
It was more like hissing Sleestakes
Moving slowly slithering with confidence

Come sink with me into the yawning abyss
You have to be a crazy person
To assert you never wanted this
Come jump with me into the maw of the great, yawning abyss
Don't be silly now, you know you've always wanted this

Come sink with me into the yawning abyss
You have to be a crazy person
To assert you never wanted this
Come jump with me into the maw of the great, yawning abyss
Don't be silly now, you know you've always wanted this

(Don't be silly now)
(Don't be silly now)
(Don't be silly now)
(You know you've always wanted this)
